27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. moveth: Heb. creepeth

are two of the most profound verses in the entire Bible because they reveal the truth about man.

  • We God created man, He looked into His own nature and copied certain of His own attributes and duplicated them in man.  We are created in His own image.
    • Intellect – We are rational and responsive creatures.
    • Will – We are free to make choices.  We are not driven by instinct like the animals.
    • Physicality – In some way our physical bodies communicate and reflect truth about God.
    • Emotion –  One of the greatest blessings that results from being created in the image of God is that He created us emotional creatures.

4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

says that Joseph’s brothers hated him so much that they could not overcome it.  Their hatred for their brother dominated them.
  • Key Points of Application
    • The longer a sinful emotion goes unchecked the stronger it becomes.
    • The longer a sinful emotion goes unchecked to more controlling it becomes.
    • When we fail to confess sin, sin grows stronger and dominates.
