Series: Life of Joseph
Text: Genesis 39:1-23Genesis 39:1-23
39 1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither. 2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. 4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 5 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. 6 And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured. 7 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 8 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; 9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? 10 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. 11 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within. 12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. 13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, 14 That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice: loud: Heb. great 15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out. 16 And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home. 17 And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: 18 And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out. 19 And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled. 20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. 21 But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. shewed...: Heb. extended kindness unto him 22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. 23 The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

“All children must look after their own upbringing.  Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right path, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands.” - John Bartlett

What is character?

  • D.L. Moody said, “Character is what you are in the dark.”
  • Character is what we are when we think that nobody is looking
  • One of the best definition of character is:  “Character is the moral, ethical, and spiritual undergirding that rests on truth, that reinforces a life is stressful times, and resists all temptations to compromise”
  • The blessing of God can be upon us in times of trouble
    • Genesis 39:1-6Genesis 39:1-6
And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.
reveal that Joseph did not complain, but he made the best of a bad situation
    • We need to be faithful in times of trouble just like Joseph (James 1:2-4James 1:2-4
2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; temptation: or, trials 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
      )
  • The blessing of God will enable a man to prosper and his prospering will be apparent to others
    • The Scripture says that Joseph prospered in all that he did with his hands.
    • When God’s hand is upon us others will see it
  • The blessing of God does not entitle us to sinful indulgences
    • Joseph withstood temptation
      • He refused her.  Verse 8
      • He avoided her.  Verse 10
      • He fled from her.  Verse 12
    • 1 Corinthians 10:131 Corinthians 10:13
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. common...: or, moderate

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. colours: or, pieces 4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. 6 And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed: 7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. 8 And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words. 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me. 10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? 11 And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

Will we worship ourselves and our own desires or will worship the true God?

  • The Bible teaches that addiction of every kind comes from the soul (John 8:34John 8:34
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
    )
  • Addictions are life dominating sins that control us.  They consume us, they are a banquet in the grave
  • Addiction is a life dominating sin.  In that sense, an addiction could be any sin that controls or consumes us
    • Any activity, thought, or emotion that dominates and controls us
    • Anything that masters us or makes us a slave
    • Any activity, thought, or emotion that dominates us is caused by a worship disorder and it is idolatry.
  • Genesis 37:4Genesis 37:4
4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
indicates that Joseph’s brother’s lives were dominated by hatred
  • Failure to deal with sin leads to domination by sin
    • Unconfessed sin grows stronger
    • Unconfessed sin controls the believer
  • Failure to deal with sin leads to spiritual indifference
    • Unconfessed sin leads to spiritual callousedness
    • Unconfessed sin leads to spiritual blindness
  • Failure to confess sin leads to judgment.
    • Unconfessed sin opens the door to other sins
    • Unconfessed sin leads to judgment

22 And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him; colours: or, pieces 24 And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? 27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh.
